Article: Russian Jets Violate Estonian Airspace – September 19, 2025

Airspace Violation

On September 19, 2025, a serious incident occurred on NATO’s eastern flank. According to the Estonian government, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets illegally entered the country’s airspace. The aircraft remained over Estonia for about 12 minutes, flying with transponders switched off and without communication with air traffic control.

This was one of the most serious violations in recent years and immediately triggered a NATO response.

NATO’s Response

NATO’s command activated emergency procedures. F-35 fighters were scrambled from a base in Norway to intercept the Russian jets and escort them out of Estonian airspace. According to NATO statements, the violation was a clear breach of international law and posed a serious threat to security in the Baltic region.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stressed that the Alliance “will remain vigilant and protect every inch of its members’ territory.”

Estonia’s Response

The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs immediately summoned the Russian chargé d’affaires, demanding explanations. Prime Minister Kaja Kallas announced that Estonia was invoking Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, calling allies for consultations on regional security threats.

Tallinn emphasized that the violation was not an accident but a deliberate provocation from Moscow.

Wider Context

The incident took place at a time of rising regional tensions. Russia has been intensifying its activities near NATO borders, including:

  • GPS signal jamming over the Baltic,
  • large-scale military drills in the Pskov region,
  • increasingly frequent flights without filing flight plans with civilian air traffic control.

According to Estonian authorities, Moscow’s actions are aimed at testing NATO’s readiness and creating uncertainty in the Baltic states.

Possible Consequences

  • Strengthened NATO presence – additional air patrols and rotational deployment of allied forces in Estonia are expected.
  • EU political mobilization – MEPs from the Baltic states are calling for a stronger EU stance against Russia.
  • Escalation risk – repeated incidents may lead to more serious confrontations if Russian aviation continues its aggressive maneuvers.
