Drone Attacks on Poland and Romania – What Could Have Happened to Civilians?

In recent weeks, residents of Poland and Romania have been alarmed by reports of Russian drones violating their airspace. While many of them were shot down and others crashed in uninhabited areas, we cannot ignore what might have happened if the situation had gone differently.

1. Strikes on Residential Buildings

The greatest risk was that a drone could hit houses or apartment blocks. In such a case:

  • civilians could have been killed or injured,
  • fires and destruction of infrastructure would have followed,
  • evacuations could have paralyzed entire neighborhoods.

This is exactly what has been seen in Ukraine, where drones destroyed homes in the middle of the night.

2. Strikes on Public Facilities

Equally dangerous would be hitting:

  • schools, hospitals, or kindergartens,
  • railway stations or bus depots,
  • shopping malls.

Without warning, civilians would have no chance to evacuate.

3. Transportation Disaster

A drone in controlled airspace could collide with a passenger or military plane.

  • Even a small collision might cause an aviation disaster.
  • Falling drones could also hit highways or rail tracks, causing large-scale accidents.

4. Psychological Effects

Even if a drone did not directly hit anyone, its presence over a city could cause:

  • panic among residents,
  • trauma for children and the elderly,
  • a loss of trust in the safety of daily life.

5. Risk to Everyday Infrastructure

Drones could damage:

  • power lines, leading to blackouts,
  • water systems, cutting access to drinking water,
  • fuel depots, causing explosions or contamination.

All of these would directly affect civilians.
