Gorlice to Launch Production of First Fully Polish 155mm Artillery Shells
The city of Gorlice is about to mark a milestone in Poland’s defense industry. Soon, it will become the birthplace of the first fully Polish-made 155mm artillery shells, meeting NATO standards and produced without foreign licensing dependencies.
Kuźnia Glinik Steps into the Defense Sector
The initiative is a result of a strategic collaboration between Polska Grupa Odlewnicza (PGO) – owner of Kuźnia Glinik in Gorlice – and the Military Institute of Armament Technology (WITU). Their two-year joint effort focused on developing a 100% domestic artillery shell casing. Now, the project is entering its final prototyping stage, with live testing scheduled for 2026.
A Shift in Strategic Thinking
According to PGO’s Vice President for Commerce, Andrzej Bulanowski, the ongoing war in Ukraine reshaped global views on conventional artillery. Once thought to be overshadowed by rocket systems, traditional gun artillery – particularly in the 155mm caliber – has proven its decisive power in modern combat scenarios.
The new shells, designed entirely in Poland, will not only increase national defense autonomy but also eliminate licensing constraints from foreign partners. This gives Poland full control over manufacturing and deployment, a crucial step in strengthening the country’s military independence.
Defense Industry Returns to Gorlice
This project symbolizes the revival of Gorlice’s industrial legacy, now focused on cutting-edge defense technologies. It is a significant development for both the local economy and national strategic capabilities.
Poland’s arms industry is undergoing a transformation—and Gorlice is at its forefront.
